Charitable NFT Drop at Davos!

Drop Live the 24th of January 2022 on SuperRare

Women&Climate in Davos

CODE GREEN is teaming up with WORLD OF WOMEN — the leading, and highest-selling women-centric NFT collection to curate a charitable NFT drop on the theme — WOMEN & CLIMATE.

World Of Women brand

The carbon-net negative drop was announced on 21st January on the margins of the digital edition of DAVOS — in collaboration with 1t.org, an initiative of the World Economic Forum.

It will subsequently land on SuperRare on Monday 24th January.

Artists will channel 70% of their proceeds to women-led solutions along the GREAT GREEN WALL — an African-led initiative growing an 8000 km green corridor across the Continent to improve the lives of millions of women on the frontline of climate change.

The drop will feature 1/1 edition artworks by 12 digital artists — both established and emerging — inspired by the interlinked challenges of GENDER EQUALITY and CLIMATE JUSTICE.

THE CAUSE

Climate change affects us all — but not equally. Women and girls disproportionately bear the brunt of increasingly brutal climate impacts. Not only are they more likely to die when natural disasters strike; they are left with fewer coping resources at their disposal given they are often poorer, have less access to education, and are frequently excluded from decision-making processes.

At CODE GREEN, we believe there can be no climate justice without gender justice. The two are inextricably linked, with women the true pioneers in the fight against climate change managing the majority of the world’s natural resources.

Nowhere is this more evident than in Africa’s Sahel region, where women makeup 80% of the agricultural labor force but grapple with the daily fallout of climate breakdown, from persistent droughts to food insecurity, mass migration to natural resource induced conflicts.

That’s why we are focusing our first NFT fundraising event on the Great Green Wall — an urgent initiative growing an 8000 km natural wonder of the world across Africa — helping to build the resilience of women across the Sahel who are living on the precipice of an accelerating global emergency.

IMPACT

The proceeds from the fundraising event will be channeled through 3 grassroots networks and campaigns, championing the most innovative and impactful solutions on the Continent.

  • 1t.org’s Uplink Challenge for the Great Green Wall & the Sahel, supporting the top ecopreneurs on the Continent spearheading innovative approaches to implementing this epic vision
  • Great Green Wall Frontline — is a new campaign championing the role of citizen power in bringing the Great Green Wall to life through people-powered solutions and citizen assemblies to grow a movement that is truly owned by the Wall’s custodian communities
  • The Global Shea Alliance (GSA) — is a non-profit industry association that promotes the vital role of the shea tree as a critical source of income to the livelihoods of 16 million women across Africa.

After standard platform and operating fees, 70% of the profits will go to the Great Green Wall, with the 30% remaining with the artist of the sold piece.

CARBON NET NEGATIVE DROP

It goes without saying that any NFT drop inspired by climate change — should not have a negative impact on the planet. That’s why in addition to directing 70% of the proceeds of our upcoming NFT drop to women-led climate solutions — our event will also be carbon net-negative.

With the boom around NFTs in the past year, blockchains like Ethereum that operate on the energy-intensive Proof of Work protocol have come under intense scrutiny.

While offsetting as a mitigation tool isn’t a silver bullet for preventing emissions, we believe it does have an important role to play in reducing the carbon footprint of NFTs, while Ethereum moves to a less energy-intensive Proof of Stake protocol.

In our view, carbon offsetting projects are worth pursuing only if the economic, social, and environmental co-benefits they produce are significant and they are deeply linked to the enhancement of local livelihoods. Indeed, offsetting revenues for smallholder farmers and communities can significantly help increase the profitability and sustainability of a project particularly in places like the Sahel.

CARBON FOOTPRINT

We have calculated the estimated carbon footprint of our NFT drop to be 4,416 kg CO2.

This projection is based on the following transactions on SuperRare:

  • 12 mints of the artworks (by artists)
  • 12 transfers to the curator’s account (WoW account)
  • 12 transactions to set the approval
  • 12 transactions to list the artworks
  • 12 settling transactions
  • 36 (estimated number) bidding transactions

This totals 96 total transactions, with each transaction equating to approximately 46 Kg CO2.

To put this in perspective, a return economy flight for 2 passengers, from Chicago to Zurich (the closest airport to Davos) emits approximately 4,600kg of CO2.

We calculate that hosting an equivalent physical auction, which would require flying in a minimum of 12 artists plus a 5 person organizing team from different corners of the globe, would emit in excess of 34,000kg based on 17 return flights in economy class alone. This is before factoring in the additional footprint of necessary materials to hold the event or local transportation that would go into curating a physical auction.

PEOPLE-CENTERED APPROACH TO OFFSETTING

Having consulted with our advisory team, we have decided to partner with PLAN VIVO, an internationally recognized framework for carbon offsetting.

Plan Vivo adopts a people-centered approach and represents real, additional, and verifiable environmental benefits, with projects subject to annual reviews and third-party verification.

Through Plan Vivo, we will be supporting EthioTrees, a project that aims to improve rural household incomes for landless farmers in villages of the North Ethiopian Highlands, by supporting the woodland restoration and ecosystem-services development.
