Resume Building and First Impressions
In today’s Placement and Job Recruitment scenario, the first document that a candidate is judged on is their Resume/CV. It is crucial to ensure that our Resume reflects who we are to make a good first impression.
It is a natural tendency to want to mention every single detail on the Resume so as to not miss out on anything that could potentially give us an edge over the other applications.
However, mentioning something completely irrelevant can also backfire. The interview could question us asking how is a particular experience related to the job profile we’ve applied for and if there is no meaningful connection, we can end up losing the opportunity.
If you were to interview a candidate, would you prefer someone who carries the same Resume for every interview or someone who has curated their Resume just for your interview?
It could be something as small as rephrasing the Objective/Career Statement to fit that Job Profile. Little efforts like these make a lot of difference in such a scenario where everyone is almost equally qualified for the job.
Another common misconception is the use of very professional language. We often look for synonyms of common words in an attempt to make our Resume sound more intellectual.
The average time an interviewer spends on your Resume in the first glance is a maximum of 10 seconds, at best. During those few seconds, they are looking for words that somehow match the job description. Hence, using complicated words can actually reduce the chances of us being shortlisted.
