Design

Since the OnePlus Bullets Wireless 2, the business has employed the same iconic OnePlus design on all of its wireless audio products, including the OnePlus Buds Z earbuds. The OnePlus Buds Z are a pair of headphones that are extremely comfy to wear. The earbuds are exceptionally light, and the in-ear design ensures that your ears are not overworked. You may wear them for the remainder of their battery life without feeling tired or uncomfortable.

The earphones also don’t protrude too far from your head, allowing you to wear them when lying on your side in bed. You can still feel them, but they aren’t bothersome.

Audio quality during performance

For the price, the OnePlus Buds Z provide good audio quality. They have a warm, bassy tone with a sprinkling of high-end sparkle for good measure.

The low-end of the OnePlus Buds Z is really strong. The bass is constantly boosted throughout the range, resulting in a powerful and resonant low-frequency response. This gives percussion instruments more body, which isn’t always desirable because you don’t want the conga to sound like the bass drum, for example. However, because you’re not truly duplicating the sound of an actual instrument with electronic music, accuracy is less of a necessity, and it’s more of a matter of personal preference. The low-end is a little warm for me, but your mileage may vary.

Microphone

The OnePlus Buds Z’s microphone performance is adequate. It passed our recorded audio test with flying colours, and it had no trouble delivering sound to the other party during actual phone calls. The microphone performance is adequate for basic voice and video calls.

Battery

The OnePlus Buds Z are stated to have a battery life of 5 hours of continuous usage and 20 hours when you add the three additional charges. In my tests, the OnePlus Buds Z consistently lasted slightly over 4 hours until the case was empty, resulting in a total battery life of just over 16.5 hours.

Personally, I am less worried with the total battery life of TWS earbuds and am more concerned with constant use. The battery life is approximately average for a gadget in this class, at just over four hours, and not very spectacular.

After a 10-minute charge, OnePlus claims 3 hours of battery life. However, this is when both the earphones and the case are charging, and if you read the tiny print, you’ll find that the battery life is actually 1.5 hours while only the earphones are charging inside the case, which is a more likely scenario. Replicating this test yielded exactly 1.5 hours of battery life, confirming the promise.

Conclusion

I believe you are receiving more than your money’s worth at that price. While the audio quality isn’t spectacular, it’s far ahead of what you’d expect at this price point. The battery life is similar: it’s not fantastic, but it’s not terrible either. They’re comfy, and the build quality and finish are comparable to AirPods costing three times as much.

The flaws are tiny, but they amount to death by a thousand cuts, where seemingly insignificant details like the inconvenient layout of the earphones within the case, which forces you to either fumble with them or turn the entire case around, deprive the product of any sense of delight or true fulfilment.

Then there’s the strange glitching with the OnePlus Buds app’s UI, which occurs strangely with OnePlus’ own phones, or the earphones simply turning off at random moments, which are more serious concerns and additional evidence of the company’s increasingly awful quality control standards. Fortunately, these concerns could be resolved with a software update.

Having saying that, I believe these are still worthwhile purchases for anyone in this price range. There aren’t any major software flaws, and you’ll be hard pressed to find a better value in this category.
