State of the World…

LGBTI+ activism requires courage, tenacity, and an urge to rebel against social norms that were created to oppress. We saw courage at a Pride parade in Paraguay, with thousands of people participating, and when lawmakers in Nepal demanded plans and policies for sexual minorities. We saw rebellion in Mauritius as they sought to overturn a colonial-era law against gay sex and when Montego Bay Pride in Jamaica sued their mayor for banning them from hosting events. Tenacity is needed in this fight for when the opposition stands firm in their discriminatory decisions, such as a Congress in Mexico rejecting same-sex marriage and in Ghana when sex education received anti-LGBT backlash, despite not having any LGBTI+ content. These attributes are just a few that describe the LGBTI+ community’s ability to be resilient in the face of adversity and is exactly what we need to move forward and create positive social change.
