State of the World…
Breakthroughs and setbacks defined the queer world this week. A third person was cured of HIV in Germany. The United States passed various bills to advance LGBTQ rights, including banning conversion therapy, discrimination, and hate crimes; however, Trump’s transgender military restriction begins next month. In Egypt, an 18-year old trans activist was arrested, and in Mexico a trans woman was murdered as she was thrown from a moving truck. Positively, Germany began offering compensation to men who faced criminal investigations under historically anti-gay laws, and London mayor Sadiq Khan called on the United Kingdom for urgent, fully-funded PrEP. Additionally, two ex-policemen were arrested over the murder of Marielle Franco, a black, gay activist murdered in Brazil last year. This week shows us how vast and relentless queer advocacy is, but that the justice system can be used as a tool to change societies built on inequality.
