State of the World…

This week was defined by advancements in marriage equality, solidarity, positive election results, and more inclusive pride parades, as well as huge steps backwards in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Ecuador’s Constitutional Court started hearing arguments for and against marriage equality, while at the same time the Cayman Islands legalized gay marriage. Lori Lightfoot was elected as the mayor of Chicago in the United States, becoming Chicago’s first black, lesbian mayor. Solidarity was shown when a top military judge in Lebanon ruled that homosexuality was not a crime, as well as a mayor in the city of Turin, Italy unveiled a banner that countered the anti-gay, pro-life World Congress of Families that took place in Verona. Solidarity was also shown by the United Nations’ High Commissioner for Human Rights as she described the new penal code in Brunei as “cruel and inhuman punishments.” This week, these and many more stories show us how the fight for LGBTQ rights globally can move so quickly. These stories also tell us why we need to remain constantly vigilant as we progress.
