State of the World…
The rights of LGBTI+ people globally are simultaneously being upheld and violated at the same time — and this week is no different. Marriage equality was the center of this week as 200,000+ people marched in Taiwan pride just five months after the arrival of marriage equality, as well as the new parliament in Switzerland moving to pass marriage equality in the upcoming term. This is in direct contradiction to Panama where the National Assembly moved to ban marriage equality. Civil society came together in Scotland as LGBTI+ activists fought back after a second Chick-fil-A quietly opened and in Uganda when activists demanded that charges be dropped against sixteen LGBTI+ Ugandans. This backlash against LGBTI+ people was also felt in Australia, as their Bureau of Statistics removed gender and sexuality questions in their 2021 census. Despite the progress we continue to see, our work towards LGBTI+ liberation will not be complete until we see progress everywhere.
