War & Fireworks
War Is Boring
423

Growing up with a dad who was a combat veteran, I learned to get down when we heard a loud pop nearby, usually from somebody setting off an unseasonal firework, but a couple times we were sure we heard gunfire. I remember lying on the floor, listening to my dad yell out orders. I still jump when I hear a loud bang nearby…it hasn’t left me. At a bar a couple of years ago, a pool cue was dropped by a group of people behind me and I leapt in my chair. When they started laughing, I almost went over to go off on them, and I hadn’t even been in the military. Just goes to show you how much of an impact war has on the people who fight in them and those who love them.
