Back in the day (mid-1983), I was a programmer for one of the “Baby Bells” and went to work in one of our brand-new data centers in Bellevue, WA. We didn’t have individual offices, but our cubicles and partitions were so high that I could barely see over them when I stood up (and I’m 6' 4"). The partitions were all cloth, and the ceilings were coated in some noise-absorbing material. Basically, it was as quiet as a library. When you’ve got a New York City phone book-sized source-code printout in front of you, unbroken concentration is paramount. I can’t even comprehend working in an “open plan” layout!
