Can I Have Fries On That Fork?

Brad this is simply awesome and ideally we’ve be doing much more forking than lumping into central systems. It’s a great example of what I’ve proclaimed many times, that there is actually no single DS106.

Yes the UMW iterations look rather similar because we did coalesce around a similar structure which got wrapped into the open course version from 2013 which we put there because no one was running a class section (and that version is getting dated and link rotted). But over on the DS106 History is a listing of numerous iterations beyond UMW and beyond the digital storytelling course.

I’ve more or less forked the ideas of the Assignment Bank and the Daily Creates into at least 4 or 5 other projects.

But I agree that the way most of us did DS106 was organized around media types, and draped over a larger query about what it means to do stories in and on the web and what it means to do your work in your own space.

And yes, the original assignment bank is a sprawling mess. No one has tended it for a while; when I was teaching course (last was 2014) through the site, I was more proactive at pruning assignments. Some were better as daily creates, many were redundant, and I regularly unpublished ones that had no responses. But it’s been a while.

My approach was to do something like you are doing; when we did a media type, I would pick one or two I want everyone to do, and leave the rest for user choice.

My hunch is students did not notice or take care of the different ways to filter; paging through 197 design ones in reverse chronological order is insane. Sorting by ones with the most responses is one way to see more popular ones or by filtering by high stars.

I also at one time I categorized ones I thought were worth featuring. Still it’s a lot. Someone should do some house cleaning.

I’ve put more energy into features for the new theme-based version of the bank. In that one, you might have verticals like media types as organizers, but you can also use tags, and an open taxonomy to group assignments across, which could be by the themes you list.

I do like the more purposed approach you designed, more about themes / topics, and the idea of letting students choose how to respond (the inspiration lines you have are a great idea, I might pilfer).

We look forward to seeing how yours rolls out, there’s room on this internet for all kinds of wild forks. And it shows again, that DS106 is not bounded, nor a single entity. It’s a wild hydra.
