August Ferdinand Möbius

The famous German mathematician and theoretical astronomer August Ferdinand Möbius is the mastermind behind Coimex Project. Born in Schulpforta, Germany, he is related to Martin Luther from his mother’s side. He studied astronomy as a pupil of Karl Mollweide, the mathematician and astronomer, at the University of Leipzig. Later on, he studied astronomy with the mathematician, astronomer and physicist Carl Friedrich Gauss at the University of Göttingen when Gauss was the director of the university’s observatory. After he completed his studies in here, Möbius went to study with Gauss’s mentor Johan Pfaff to the University of Halle. This is where Möbius had completed his doctoral thesis “The Occultation of Fixed Stars” in 1815. He was accepted to the University of Leipzig as the “Extraordinary Professor” to the board of astronomy and higher mechanics in 1816. His son, Theodor, is also known as a respected philologist.

As the first mathematician to introduce homogeneous coordinates into projective geometry, the number of mathematical formulas and concepts that are named after Möbius is many, including Möbius tetrads, Möbius plane, Möbius transformations and the Möbius transform of number theory. Möbius was extremely into number theory and this ended up with the Möbius function μ(n) and the Möbius inversion formula coming into use. He has developed the use of signed angles and line segments in simplifying and unifying results in Euclidean geometry.

In addition to his theoretical studies, Möbius is highly recognized for his discovery of the Möbius strip that has inspired Coimex team and is reflected on Coimex logo. Möbius strip is “a non-orientable two-dimensional surface with only one side when embedded in three-dimensional Euclidean space”.

The answer for how Möbius inspired Coimex team lies right under the strip that was discovered by Möbius himself. Möbius strip, or in other words, the infinity strip, is the “non-orientable two-dimensional surface with only one side when it is embedded in three-dimensional Euclidean space”. Less technically, the shape is basically what we know today as the infinity strip with no beginning and no end, that is in a smooth and constant loop.

And as Coimex, we were inspired by this strip and decided to bring the dream of an infinite loop of international trade into reality.
