The star forward of Paris Saint-Germaine signed a deal worth over $20 million over three years to promote the digital fan token company Socios.com. The deal will involve Messi promoting the company during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The deal is similar to others made by major sports stars, like the NFL’s Tom Brady or the NBA’s LeBron James. Indeed, the world of professional sports is increasingly intertwined with the world of crypto and Web3. For his part, Messi stated “I’m proud to join Socios.com’s mission to create a more connected and rewarding future for fans around the world.”

The country of Georgia, with a population of only 3.7 million, seems to be an unlikely center of Bitcoin mining. However, Georgia has major hydropower capacity and ranks seventh worldwide on the World Bank’s ease-of-doing-business index. This has attracted some major Bitcoin mining operations, including the Dutch company Bitfury, as well as a number of smaller, individual miners. Indeed, a recent report by Arcane Research suggests that Georgia’s hash rate is 0.71%, much more than the official hash rate of 0.18% claimed by the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index. However, the success of the mining industry comes with costs; because of rising electricity usage, the Georgian government looks set to deter further mining operations in the future.
