Profile:

Position: Point Guard

Role: Sharpshooter

Age: 20

Nation: USA

Year: Sophomore

College: Florida

Height: 6’4

Wingspan: 6’4

Weight: 178 lbs

Stats:

Positives:

  • Knockdown shooter. He is comfortable hitting shots from all over the court both off the dribble and off the catch. His form is very smooth with a quick release and off the catch, he goes right up into his shot without dipping the ball at all, which removes some of the variability that comes with more movement. His range extends deep beyond the 3-point line and teams that sag off or try to go under on screens are asking to be punished. He isn’t the highest volume catch-and-shoot player but he is more than comfortable making them and is really good at hitting them off of screens and handoffs.
  • Excellent shot creator. He has a deep arsenal of dribble moves and stepbacks that he uses to create separation from his defender before launching into his lethal pull-up jumper. He is a potent scorer both in the mid-range and from beyond the arc.
  • Nice floater. He is very good at hitting floaters on the run, his soft touch and ability to knock those down should translate well to the NBA.
  • Solid playmaker. He isn’t a traditional floor general but he does an excellent job of using his scoring gravity to create opportunities for his teammates. He is especially effective as the handler in pick-and-roll situations. He penetrates the defense before either hitting the roller or dishing it out to an open shooter. He has solid vision and is a fairly talented passer.

Negatives:

  • Limited athleticism. A slow first step means he won’t be beating many players off the dribble when driving to the rack. He struggles to apply pressure to the rim and will likely need to rely on his jumper falling to be a consistent scoring threat.
  • Not a great finisher. He is a ground-bound athlete who struggles scoring at the rim against taller defenders. He will need to improve his craftiness to become more of a driving threat.
  • Turnover-prone. His handle can be sloppy at times, leading to him being stripped. He doesn’t fare well against traps and had a tendency to throw the ball away when driving into contact.
  • Poor defender. His lack of quickness results in him being beaten off the dribble and stronger opponents can push through him. He is also foul-prone when closing out and needs to improve his positioning.

Upside:

  • D’Angelo Russell
  • Darius Garland
  • Trae Young

Notes:

For Tre Mann, his signature skill is his ability to knock down shots from anywhere on the court. He can hit them off the dribble as he is an excellent shot creator with a nice handle. He can also hit them off the catch due to his impressive ability to accurately shoot off of movement. His range both off the dribble and off the catch extends far beyond the three-point line. Outside of his shooting, he has a killer floater game and is more than capable as a playmaker.

Despite his strengths, Mann does suffer from several flaws that cap his overall potential. First, his athleticism isn’t great and he isn’t crafty enough to overcome that on offense. He struggles to get to the basket, and at an NBA level, being unable to apply pressure on the rim limits an on-ball scorer’s utility. He also doesn’t have the defensive quickness to stop most perimeter players and his neutral wingspan isn’t doing him any favors in that department.

Until Mann develops his driving and defensive abilities, Mann will be best suited as a bench offensive spark plug. However, if he can make strides in these departments, he certainly has starter potential and could become one of the better scoring guards in the league.
