Despite an excellently written article, and all the support you are receiving in agreement, I am your rare disagree. I’ve written on this too much, so I’m not getting deep into all my excellent reasons, I think Facebook is awesome, and has been an incredible tool for changing the human consciousness around the world, the amount of knowledge and information it has provided, and the great online friendships, and local visiting friendships I’ve established, especially the past 4 years.
In 4 years, I jumped from 400+ friends, to the limited 5K. It sends the most people to my blog, of any other platform. It provides for a larger, and more powerful arena of important debate and communication that will only advance mankind, and help us avoid an early nuclear extinction, I am sure.
Greater communication has historically allowed for greater improvements and advances among civilization. It has offered more lucrative lives for millions, and if you choose your friends correctly, as you should in real life, you can end up with 5000 people who don’t unfriend you, chat you up daily, support your writing, and other endeavors, and you find out who your real friends are, and who aren’t.
As far as my email address, maybe phone number, and my traits, and FB habits, I couldn’t give two bits about what they know, and how they use it to not only make money, as you say, but to offer each of us an easier, and quicker path to answers, news, and products we might actually need, or want, without wasting our time.
I don’t care what information they sell about me, because it sure hasn’t harmed me in any way, what so ever. I find it quite self-centered, and self-focused to be worried about such minor things, concerning the intelligent marketing decisions they make and utilize.
If you really want to be mad or uncomfortable about something that actually matters, regarding the human condition, there is a plethora of much more horrible and dangerous things occurring all around you, our White House, and throughout the entire world. Kids are being kidnapped, killed, force to have sex. People and children are still starving in a wealthy world, and dying after living in turmoil in cities torn to the ground, ravaged by constant war.
Now, we have a demagogue, and narcissistic maniac running our country. Black men are being killed by officers with PTSD, or ingrate hate and racial judgment of equal human beings. So, what is your complaint again? Someone is sharing a couple ways to contact me, and know about my habits in relation to marketing campaigns that have been using consumer data for decades, prior to Facebook? Yeah, I am just so devastated.
How dare Facebook be profitable capitalistic business? It’s downright horrid. Maybe all businesses should be boycotted. Finally, I’m wondering if it’s just your youth causing selfish ignorance, mind you, or are you really that obtuse to the fact that marketing, consumer studies, and the psychology of advertising which I A+d in 2002, haven't already been in use for decades?
Okay, so FB has mastered marketing, and they can use their platform to spread their knowledge about consumers up. Does that really make them devious and dangerous? I know not.
I’ve been on FB since being one of the first 1000 to use it. Even then, I battled my first ex-wife over putting a picture of me and my kids on the platform, being accused of putting their lives in danger. Needless to say, 14 years later, my exes page is plastered with pics of the kids. Lol.
You're over-zealous, unfounded hate for FB being genius and successful, actually makes me chuckle, and I worry how people such as yourself, will handle the onslaught of AI, and even more advanced tech in communication, and an even greater connection that will help establish a better planet, not a worse one.
I don’t mean to be rude, but you look young, and from what I’m gathering, have much to learn about the world. Gee, you yourself, are abusing FB’s image, in order to make a buck, as well. How are you any better than Zuckerberg?
Please, rethink your thought process, because too many of you would cause humans to fall back and revert to an age when things got hidden, and actual real crimes went unnoticed, and even greater communication was ridiculed and fought against as far back as the Roman and Egyptian reigning days.
Shutting down the largest platform for communication leading to a better world, is like accusing Michael Jackson of having molested 100 children. It’s just not feasible, and is actually a useless waste of time and energy.
Facebook is here to stay for much longer than you can imagine, obviously. I suggest you reactivate, and apologize to the hundreds of friends who used to care about you, more than you realize. I do wish you well, however, and I hope you have a successful, but more educative career, before spewing hate toward the greatest champions of communication the Earth has ever known.
Imagine writing about Alexander Graham Bell in the same nature, because phones could have been seen as invasive tools entering our homes, back then. Yet, somehow, they weren’t.
Facebook is an integral part of improving society, by offering a huge platform for debate on man’s ever continuing need to control something they don’t fully comprehend quite yet.
I was able to reconnect with half the cast of Starlight Express I worked with in Germany in 1991 and 92. I was informed of the 30th gala, and I’ve found incredibly beautiful friends, who do really care, and Facebook made me aware that there are way more good people in the world than ever believed.
Facebook has been a huge part of me maturing, respecting others more, and growing into a much more emotionally intelligent man, who is daily flabbergasted by the outpouring of support, and knowledge and kindness I never received at any other time in my horrible early life.
Facebook has helped me to defeat deep depression, and put it on an unlit back burner, hopefully forever. If FB closed, I’d be devastated, for one. It is also the best traffic driver to my blog and sites.
What is there to complain about again?
Oh, right, genius marketing tactics and campaigns.
