The problem is that our “relationship with technology” is such a wide ranging affair (no pun intended, perhaps there should be.) We blame the tech, the gadgets and their proliferation, because it is so easy to do yet the real issue is behavioural but we don’t like to be told, or admit, that we have a problem and that our personal behaviour is anything other than it should be.
When it comes to choices, rather than deciding about which app to use or how to approach tasks, it’s more a case of “just because we can it doesn’t mean we should!”
Tech is excellent at assisting us with various tasks that make our lives easier but it is what we do with tech outside of this that is the big issue. I think this is why people opt for a detox as it is often the easy (perhaps only) way to remove these extra things from our lives without having to admit our faults.
My current “detox” is born of a need for self preservation, for the sake of my sanity in the wake of the likes of Brexit and Trump when the world has become such a negative place that threatens to pull you under.
We have a responsibility to ourselves and to others.
We have to re-asses what we do with what we have, both individually and as a society, and remember that we are still relatively new to this. 10 years may be forever in “internet time” but on an evolutionary scale it is but a drop in the ocean and we, as human beings, are still trying to work out how to cope with the rapid change occurring all around us.
