Yes, I’m guilty of consoling other like-minded believers that God won’t give us more than we can handle, though I console myself with this version of 1 Corinthians 10 verse 13 even more. As I look at the verse, it’s more about not being tempted more than I can take, perhaps a different perspective?

I agree God’s response is not to downplay what we face but to offer a lifeline He won’t let go — Jesus as the sacrifice for our sins, and His spirit to guide us after we’re baptised into water until we’re with Him forever.

It certainly seems more practical, facing the difficulties of life with others, to support each other with words like those you suggested:
‘I’m sorry this has happened.’

‘What can I do to help?’

‘I love you, my friend.’

These also remind me of what the apostle Paul often said, as well as James and John in the New Testament.
