How I find the best talent for NS4L…
Yesterday, I received a phone call from another local business owner that wanted to pick my brain on what I do when it comes to hiring new help. I get asked this question a lot and I am sure I have written about it in the past or it has made itself in a Vlog at some point, but it’s always relevant in business, so I thought I would share:
- Hiring from within. If at all possible, I do what I can to hire from within the organization. I have a team member that just started a new position as a service writer at our shop. He had started his NS4L career as a driver, picking up and delivering scooters, and when the position opened up, he expressed interest in the position. I laid out my expectations, trained him (and continue to do so), and told him that at the end of 90 days we would evaluate his performance based on particular benchmarks. He is still within the 90 day period, but so far so good! If you have the opportunity to promote within the organization, then do it.
- Referrals. Many of the best hires have come from referrals. I’ll let the team know that I am looking, I’ll let my friends know that I am trying to find someone, and then referrals come in. Sometimes a simple post on my personal Facebook page helps me find a quality hire too!
- Our website. On the homepage of our website, we highlight all of our awesome team members. In this section, there is a blank picture that says “Are YOU Our Future Rockstar?” When you click the link, it highlights all positions we currently have available and the qualifications we are looking for, plus a few FAQs. Sometimes the rockstars come to us!
- Our NS4L Newsletter. This is the one that surprises most people, but it is one of the best ways I have been able to grab amazing new help! Why our newsletter? Our newsletter goes to our CUSTOMERS of course! Who better to hire than someone who has been on ‘the other side of the counter’ and knows the customer service we expect, how long the paperwork should take, how we want to deliver a great experience with our bell-ringing ceremonies and pictures, and so much more. Hiring a customer makes the hiring process and the transition easier, so we do this as often as we can!
- Recruit. I’ve always been known to go after what I really want. I know that if I want to build the best team, I have to go after the best people in the industry. I’m constantly seeking out the best talent in our industry and then doing what I can to get them on my team.
No matter which method I use to bring a team member on my team, ultimately it is my responsibility to get them in line with my vision, care for them, build them, and invest in them in order to keep them. Once you’re in, you’re family :)
These methods help me find and hire new help. What works best for you? Comment and let me know.
