Yep, I agree. In hindsight, I set-up a false dichotomy which is only true in part.

To put it simply, I’m trying to say that a huge part of the digital design process does not require drawing pictures.

Take designing a button as an example. There is no need to draw it. We could just build it. We all know how a button functions and which states it needs. We can just design it through direct manipulation.

A lot of digital design could benefit from direct manipulation.

Sure, there are also other areas which require more creativity, thought and communication. We still need written communication, drawing tools, animation tools, pen and paper etc.

The point I was trying to make is that there is a large chunk of the process that can move beyond that part of the process, but tools are not accommodating it.
