This is the ninth part of my developer portfolio journey so if you somehow came across this article I would suggest that you read part 1.

While I wish that I could report that I was able to complete my portfolio or even just have finished the VRKit page, sadly I have done none of that. Overall this week was rather uneventful as I worked due to other pressing issues and projects that I wanted to begin working on.

There isn’t a whole lot to report for this week but I do want to keep this as a journal of my efforts towards creating this portfolio so I will share the small amount that I did do here.

Lack of Design

Normally I write about the progress that I have made along with the solutions to problems that I have faced but this time around I want to do something a bit different. Rather than focusing on what I did, I want to take some time to briefly reflect on why I failed to accomplish the things I wanted to.

Overall I think it comes down to lack of design before beginning to create the webpage. For the rest of my site, I took the time to use Adobe XD to mockup what I wanted to see in my portfolio which meant that I only had to create what I designed. This allowed me to turn off my mind and simply code without having to put a lot of thought into it. However, this time around I designed the page as I went which is caused me to take a lot more time on each portion than I would like.

While I could take some time to design a mockup, I think that it might be beneficial for me to try out this technique just to flex my creative muscles and learn which style I prefer. My first thoughts are that I way prefer designing it first but I will report on that next week.

Rushing to the Finish

Finishing with the header last week meant that this time around I needed to take the time to format the content. As shown below, the original design was rather boring, as it simply spread out the content like a paper with some fancy subtitles.

Original Design

While this would work, I wanted my site to be a bit more creative in the way it shared content and as such, I needed something different. Finding the site http://cofolios.com helped me to find a lot of inspiration in terms of what I could do to format my content.

This week I focused on simply the introduction to my content, this being information such as the team I worked with and the time that it took for me to finish the project. Using yangq.design as inspiration I was able to come up with the style that I wanted my page to reflect.

Information

I loved the way that content aligned to the side as shown in the example above so I choose to replicate it as shown below.

My version

It wasn’t a lot, but it did give me a vision of where I need to be going with the design of my project pages.

Next Up…

Now I need to (actually) finish the VRKit page!
