Reading this article and especially reading through these comments makes me feel so incredibly sick. It is SHOCKING how many positive responses this person, who has probably never really encountered real programming, gets.

Unfortunately:

The thoughts illustrated by the author of this article pretty much sum up, how almost my entire generation (millenials) think. I am ASHAMED, to be part of it. Born in 1991, I really believe that it might be the wrong time and place for me to be in.

Today the masses of, lets call them millenial coders, believe that they are incredibly smart, very special and so ‘prodigy’, because they (after a few months of superficial education) know how to code.

Still today the knowledge of ‘how to code’ is pretty exclusive, because there are so many people out there who do not know anything about it.

This gives these ‘coders’ the emotional boost and justification to pursue a very disgusting attitude of ‘being elite’ and ‘owning the great knowledge.. -the wisdom’.

And with this narcissistic mindset they go out into the world, pretending they could do better than everyone before them and everyone that is not the same opinion is wrong and is just afraid of the BIG CHANGE that will happen.

The ugly truth is…:

They ain’t know shit. They are under-educated, under-qualified and over-rated but simply not up-to the task.

I allow myself to judge that because… sitting here in my workplace, looking around… I work with this kind of human being. It is painful.

The primary problem:

This new generation (which I am part of, unfortunately) seems to always be hunting for the golden shortcut. The shortcut that saves you from understanding fundamental concepts, because they seem abstract and difficult at first sight.

The shortcut that saves you from wrapping your head around math, logic, design patterns, OOP, FP, denotational semantics and much more.*

(* if you want to understand what I mean, just watch yourself some treehouse commercials on youtube. It’s fun XD )

QUICK & EASY!! -THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is the new credo!

(please do not mistake ‘quick & easy’ for ‘simple & fast’… these are two completely different animals)

SHORTCUTS, BUZZWORDS, HYPE, AWESOMENESS, MAGIC & SELF-CONFIDENCE are the new social currency.

BEHOLD, THE FUTURE IS COMING! AND I AM PART OF IT… AMAZING!

.

.

.

to get a glimpse at what this heroic future might look like, just take a look at the JS-ecosystem now. So many young people, all of them so incredibly brilliant, all of them knowing it better than someone else, are (all for themselves) making the world a better place.

The result is AWESOME:

Cancer.

// so dear described people/author :

Please do not misunderstand your own lack of knowledge for impracticality or ‘unnecessary difficult’.

Please understand that the only way to go fast is to go well.

Please accept that there are no shortcuts

Please recognize, that you might know very little about programming and that this is not something that is bad, it is normal, especially if you are just at the beginning. So don’t try to change things just because you just do not understand them or because they seem difficult to you.

IF CODERS OF YOUR ATTITUDE REALLY ARE THE FUTURE, THIS FUTURE MIGHT TURN INTO A DISASTER.

At the end, dear author I want to , as politely and gently as possible, express my GRAVEST disrespect and disgust towards you.

Thomas
