Have you ever scrolled through your Instagram feed, and seen the most beautiful makeup on your favorite MUA? Their makeup beaten to perfection. Flawless. Not a pore insight. Then you wonder, why when I do my makeup it isn’t skin-like? Well, you’re not alone. Let’s talk about it.

The power of social media

Welcome to the world of social media! Since we live in the digital era, it influences how we expect our lives to be. And makeup is just of them. See, many social media users utilize filters from photo editing apps to enhance the quality of the image. On top of that, with these apps, we can make our skin appear airbrushed when in reality their skin might have zits, pimples, and texture. With just a tap of a finger, a picture can go from looking cakey too.

Comparison of expectation vs reality

That being said, what should be a realistic view on this topic? Well, let’s put it this way, your wrinkles, pimples, and textured skin can be minimalized with makeup. But it won’t be completely erased with makeup. Now, I know we want to look like all of the other girls who have “glass skin”, but in reality, many of us have unproblematic skin.

Why do our expectations differ from reality?

Social media is the culprit of why many want their makeup to look like our favorite influencers. It has transformed the way we view ourselves. The more we scroll through our feed, we are influenced to reach the expectations promoted by the makeup industry. The downside, it creates people to feel insecure about how their skin. The makeup industry promotes products that seem as if they will make us looks like the Photoshop models in their ads. Makeup should help enhance our natural beauty and not make us look like a completely different person.

Tips to manage your expectations

However, there is something you can do to feel happy in your own skin. Implementing simple things like drinking more water and exercising can make a major difference. Also seeing a dermatologist is highly recommended. They can give a proper diagnosis of your skin and give proper advice on how to obtain radiant skin. There are affordable treatments we get like facials, chemical peels, and many others. Healthier skin equals better makeup looks. Lastly, find techniques that suit our needs instead of trying to follow makeup trends.

Social media has created unrealistic expectations of how makeup should look on us. Nothing is wrong with your skin. Even with your flaws, you are still beautiful. Don’t let these studio-lit, heavily edited influencers mess with your head. It doesn’t matter the amount of makeup you put on, you will still have imperfections. So instead of feeling down, embrace all of your flaws and use makeup with a realistic mindset. And remember, beauty comes in all shades, sizes, and shapes!
