The harvest is ready. Where is your sickle?

Many of us miss our harvest just because our sickles are not ready. Many at times we pray for miracles or open doors yet we are not prepared to go in and harvest when the opportune time presents itself. Many of us have set goals we are aiming to attain. The right opportunity comes yet we are unable to harvest because our sickles are not ready.

Let me put this into a perspective. Tony, a junior account clerk was hoping to attain a managerial role in his organization when the opportune time comes. Tony, however, is just an average worker who does not put in efforts to learn new skills/trends in his field. He is stuck to the old knowledge/skills he learnt from school and what was passed on to him when he joined the organisation. A few years later, an opportunity presented itself for him to move up the ladder but he does not meet the requirements. His skills are outdated and do not meet the requirements of the new role. His sickle was blunt and rusted!

The sickle in this scenario refers to the needed skills to man the opportunity that presented itself. Tony, after his previous harvest, failed to keep his sickle ready for the next harvest. He was relying on his old skills to move him into his next harvest. What he failed to notice is the sickle once not maintained gets rusted and blunt — unfit for the next harvest!

Many of us are just like Tony. We rely on our old knowledge and skills set to move us up the corporate world or the next stage of our lives. We fail to notice that the world is evolving. Technology is rapidly changing things. Skills sets are getting obsolete within the twinkle of an eye.

And as soon as the grain is ready, the farmer comes and harvests it with a sickle, for the harvest time has come.”

Mark 4:29 NLT

The farmer in the parable of the growing seed was able to go in when the harvest was ready because he had his sickle ready. He didn’t miss his harvest!

Whatever we desire to attain, let’s put in efforts to ready our skills and knowledge while we await opportunities. It’s better to prepare for an opportunity than not to prepare for it and miss out!
