The Square Cup — More Than Just Coffee
The Historic Square in Talladega has experienced a renaissance as new businesses have created a spark in the once quiet community.
One of the businesses leading that charge is The Square Cup located next to the historic Ritz Theater. The Square Cup is owned and operated by Carolann Wells and Troy Haynes. Willing to take a chance, they opened their business one year ago.
“I’ve dreamed of having a coffee shop for a very very long time,” said Carolann who is now sharing that dream with Troy. “I met Troy Haynes who is the co-owner and he convinced me to put my money where my mouth was and just go for it.” said Wells who works with all the new businesses at the square.
The Square Cup offers a menu that is sure to please everyone. The menu includes coffee, espresso, sandwiches, pastries, and salads. A local favorite is the grilled chicken panini. The Square Cup also features live performances from bands and entertainers from across the state. “We’re starting a partnership with the Nashville Songwriters Association International,” said Wells, “and they will be coming two nights a month on Thursday nights and hosting events here.”
Having a small business could seem very daunting especially for Carolann and Troy who both have full-time jobs. Carolann and Troy believe that collaborating with other businesses in the square not only helps them but the city of Talladega, so they have established relationships and developed partnerships with other business owners. One way they have been able to help other businesses is by extending their hours at the coffee shop or cross promoting events on their Facebook page.
“We’re passionate about Talladega and we’re passionate about the revitalization of Talladega,” said Wells, as she talked about how working with the other businesses on The Square not only helps them but Talladega as a whole.
During their first year, they developed relationships with Ritz Theater, Shabby Sheek Boutique, Lmo & Co Art Gallery and others. “We use the resources that were here and we provide a service to them.” says Wells. That service is turning into a huge success as it’s giving excitement and energy to everyone in the community. This is an accomplishment Carolann and Troy are happy to be a part of. “It takes small business owners like us to make an effort to help Talladega,” said Wells.
As they enter their second year at The Square Cup, Carolann and Troy are expanding their business by catering various events in Talladega. They have hopes of continuing to give opportunities where ever it’s needed.
“There’s a huge opportunity in the city of Talladega but it’s about reaching out and taking advantage of it.” says Wells.
Carolann and Troy want to reach as many people in the city of Talladega as possible. So, if you get the chance, go by The Square Cup to experience what they have to offer.
The Square Cup, located at 119 Court Square N, Talladega AL, is open Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They also can be reached via phone at 256–268–8474.
