This wonderful article so perfectly describes the issues of grief. Like you, I thought that anticipatory grief would lessen my after-the-death grief, kind of like putting money in the bank.

Like you, I discovered that it doesn’t work that way. My mother wasn’t an addict, but she left her other children an emotionally dependent and prescription-drug-addicted sibling to deal with. This was on top of the emotional issues of realizing that a mother whom I’d deeply loved would no longer be around.

Next month it will be 10 years since she died. I so could have used your article right after she died, and I hope it will help anyone who faces or has faced the loss of a parent.
