What are Omega 3–6–9?
Omega 3–6–9 are fatty acids made up of chains of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Their molecular configuration is what makes them unique. These fatty acids are important for all systems to make sure our bodies function normally, including hair, skin, circulatory system, organs and brain. Omega 3 and 6 are polyunsaturated fatty acids and are considered Essential Fatty Acids as they are not produced in our bodies and therefore have to be added through our diet. Omega 9 is a monounsaturated fatty acid, it can be produced by the body however it is beneficial to obtain it in food as well. Research shows that a balance of 2:1 to 4:1 Omega 3 to Omega 6 & 9, is what is recommended in a healthy diet.
Omega 3’s are polyunsaturated fatty acids that have their first double bond located at the 3rd carbon from the omega end.
- ALA — Alpha-linolenic-acid, this is an 18 carbon chain with three cis bonds
- EPA — Eicosapentaenoic acid, this is a 20 carbon chain with 5 cis bonds
- DHA — Docosahexaenoic acid, this is a 22 carbon chain with 6 cis bonds
Omega 6’s are polyunsaturated fatty acids that have first double bond located at the 6th carbon from the omega end.
- LA — Linoleic acid, an unsaturated omega-6 fatty acid, this is an 18 carbon chain with the first double bond located at the sixth carbon from the omega end of the fatty acid
- GLA — Gamma-linolenic acid, an unsaturated omega-6 fatty acid, this too is an 18 carbon chain, it does differ slightly from the LA
- AA — Arachidonic acid, a 20 carbon chain
Omega 9’s are monounsaturated fatty acids that have their first double bond located at the 9th carbon from the methyl end.
- OA — Oleic Acid, this is an 18 carbon chain
WHAT ROLE DO THEY PLAY?
These Fatty Acids play an important role in our skin and hair function and appearance. Metabolism of linoleic acid and alpha-linoleic acid is limited in the skin. They are considered essential nutrients for the skin and hair. They play a critical role in the structural integrity and barrier function. Omega 3 & 9 influence the anti -inflammatory response of the skin while the Omega 6 promotes the pro-inflammatory response for regrowth. Both topical and oral supplementation are effective ways to deliver Essential Fatty Acids to the skin and hair. Topical application of Omega 3’s lessens UV-induced photo damage, signs of skin aging and inflammatory skin responses. Omega 9’s topical application due to their heavier consistency seal in moisture, have skin softening properties and nourish the derma and hair follicles. Omega 6’s are lighter and thinner in consistency as they nourish and protect the skin and hair. They restore the skin barrier function and reduce scaling on your skin and scalp. All three Omega Fatty Acids increase skin and hair strength, elasticity and prevent hair loss.
SOURCES OF OMEGA 3–6–9
The Fatty Acids can be found in several plants, fish and animals. The plant based sources have so many added benefits such as they are more environmentally friendly, have less of an impact on the environment and ecosystem, their sustainable and biodegradable. Plant based sources have higher instances of traceability and provide other antioxidants and vitamins. Below are a few examples of plant based sources of Omega 3–6–9.
