As a current CS student, I am increasingly afraid of the kind of mob mentality and utter lack of inclusion I see in the tech industry. The irony of the situation is that the mob always frames itself as protector of diversity, while in truth, they refuse to protect diversity with which they disagree. They claim to be protecting the rights of the minority. Shutting out dissenting voices is not the right way to protect the minority.
In 2014, Brendan Eich was forced to resign as CEO of Mozilla. His crime? A personal monetary donation to a political campaign which he felt morally obligated to support. The facts that this was a personal donation and that he promised to promote policies of inclusion as CEO — irrelevant.
Just two weeks ago, a man was publicly fired from Google after posting on an internal company board his opinion that Google’s hiring practices — intended to increase diversity — were unfair and potentially illegal, and that they harmed company morale and pushed wedges in-between co-workers. The case in favor of him is a little rockier, since his actions were not strictly personal. However, his so-called “anti-diversity manifesto” is anything but anti-diversity. Several of my self-avowed feminist friends said that upon actually reading Damore’s post, they asked themselves, “is this what I’m supposed to be up in arms about?”
And now, the case against you. While I am an outsider and do not know the specifics of the case against you, I see nothing in your post or in the examples shared here to support the claim that you are hostile, anti-inclusion, or that you have any systematic bias against anyone. If anything, the replies to your “anti-CoC” show a systematic bias against you!
My political, moral, and religious views surely do not fit into the majority in the technology sector, and I do not plan on ever working in Silicon Valley for this reason. However, I find it chilling that the tech industry allows mob mentality to override logic and reason. The very companies who appear to be promoting free speech, Google and especially Mozilla, have company cultures which undermine and actively oppose it.
I admire you for taking a stand against these unfounded, baseless claims. I wish you the best in your fight against those who seek to mute dissenting opinions.
