Why You Need Design!

Why You Need Design is a chapter from the book “You’re My Favorite Client”, by author Mike Monteiro. In it, he suggests a point that, on the surface, seems like common sense, but is actually a fundamental part not only of design and engineering, but shows us a trajectory for humanity’s progression through technology and architecture for the future.

Essentially, the design of a product, space, building, logo, etc. is more than how it looks, it’s one of the two most important aspects of whatever the subject is. The other being function. Function and Design are fundamental parts of anything man-made, and both affect the other on an intimate level. The intended function of an object will affect its design — in that a designer has to make sure that aspects of the design do not impede the function of whatever they’re designing and, in a best case scenario, has to integrate the function directly into the design.

Other than function, design is also significantly affected by the audience that the product is intended for. People, despite the fact that it may not necessarily be the best option, tend towards things that appeal to them visually. That’s why, for instance, certain cars have headlights that are meant to resemble menacing eyes, in order to convey aggression and a sense of power. People are fooled by their aesthetic desires.

As for the aforementioned forward trajectory of the future I mentioned, functionality has necessitated an increase, recently, in minimalism in design. This plays in to the appealing to the audience aspect, as minimalist designs are quite attractive to most people. Thus, as we go forward, we will start to see more an more minimalist and streamlined products, buildings, and logos.
