While there is no doubt that the rhinos and tigers in Kaziranga National Park should be protected from poachers, the park’s “shoot to kill” policy is notorious and is having serious impacts for local communities. Not only poachers are targeted. In July 2016, a seven year old boy was shot by a park guard in Kaziranga.

And I’m surprised that Bibuti Lahkar’s apparently racist statement about most of the people evicted being Bangladeshis went without comment from the author of this article. The people recently evicted from Kaziranga had been protesting against the proposed evictions for many months. Some had lived there for more than 60 years. And if they were from Bangladesh, is Lahkar really suggesting that would make it acceptable to kick them out of their homes, with no compensation, and to kill two of them?
