Guide: How to Experience Ubud on $20 a Day

Want to get your Eat, Pray, Love on, but not sure if you’ve got the budget to make it happen? While Bali’s prices are certainly less expensive than most places located in the Western world, it’s still easy to spend more than you saved. Experience a full day in Ubud (one that’s rich in activities and delicious eats) on $20 bucks or less using this helpful guide.

Breakfast at the Homestay — Forget spending $3 bucks on banana pancakes from a restaurant, most hotels and home stay accommodations in Ubud offer rooms that include a free breakfast! You’ll be grateful for the morning fuel (cheap hotel eats here are basic but always fresh) and your wallet will be thrilled.

Cheap-er Morning Yoga — The ultimate place for yogis and yogi-wannabes, Ubud provides a great variety of studios for you to perform your best downward dog. While Yoga Barn is easily the most famous, it also happens to be the most expensive, so unless you want to blow more than half the day’s budget in an hour, skip it! Ubud Yoga House offers morning classes in their stunning studio overlooking the rice paddies for just USD$10 and Taksu Yoga’s peaceful garden classes are only a dollar more.

Go on the Artists Walk — After you’ve cooled down from your yoga session familiarize yourself with the stunning landscape of Ubud with a walk amongst the rice paddies. You’ll get a gorgeous view of the mountains and find some great local stalls selling wood carvings and pretty paintings. A wonderful retreat outside of the busy city centre, the Artist’s Walk is a free way to experience this beautiful town without the tourist chaos to distract you.

Lunch in the Rice Paddies — On your Artist’s Walk you’ll come across a few restaurants tucked into the corners of the rice paddies, but the one worth trying (for the views alone) is Sari Organik. Creating fresh dishes straight from their garden next door, you’re bound to find something on their menu that you love. Dine on a delicious meal for less than USD$6.

Hit the Monkey Forest — Want to hang with the monkeys? Of course you do! Get some funny photos with the Ubudian monkeys just by strolling along Monkey Forest Road. If you didn’t make it to yoga in the morning you can use the extra money to go into the forest attraction itself, but if you’d rather save the cash, just hang around the entrance or at any of the nearby clothing stalls for a free monkey experience.

Dinner at Dayu’s Warung — Grab an awesome meal made by one of the town’s sweetest locals when you visit this cheap and healthy warung! Using only the freshest ingredients in her dishes, Dayu offers a great selection of Indonesian entrees and baked treats at prices that everyone can agree on — between $3 and $4 bucks.
