I didn’t decide to cast the general market commercial with Black actors, the client did. The client was very comfortable with that idea. The animosity was, how Black is too Black? Which is loaded in and of itself. That means defining what “too Black” is. Does that mean too dark? Too hip? Too hip hop? Too what? Also, American has proven over and over that it likes hip, edgy and cool. “Compton” was one of the biggest selling movies this year, and not because Black people went to see it, millions of whites made that move a success. If a movie about rappers from Compton isn’t too Black for America, I’m pretty sure casting a dark skinned Black man isn’t.
