Great point Jordan. Agreed, saying “I don’t know” to people who are asking you to do your job—discover answers to UX questions is definitely a bad career move :)

Yes, you should be tactful and strategic in how you word your public “I don’t knows” and the example you provided is great. I’ve also skipped over the statement entirely and gone straight for a: “Well, let’s test that out right now and see what the answer is from our users.” Which works great because it’s forward thinking, action-oriented and makes no assumptions about the truth.

But, I believe this concept starts as an internal exercise, getting over yourself and what you think you know or have assumed and digging deeper to find truth without settling for a surface answer.
