Leadership Goals

Every once and a while I stumble upon something that sticks with me. It’s likely something that most people pass over but for some reason, it hits home. Jon Stewart retired last August from the Daily Show and Comedy Central aired a fantastic finale full of stars honoring him. But it was Stephen Colbert who stole the show with this, impromptu send-off.

We should lead our teams with the goal, that they will one day say this about us.

“We owe you. And not just what you did for our career by employing us to come on this tremendous show that you made. We owe you because we learned from you. We learned from you by example how to do a show with intention, how to work with clarity, how to treat people with respect. You are infuriatingly good at your job. And all of us, who were lucky enough to work with you for 16 years, are better at our jobs because we got to watch you do yours. We are better people for having known you. You are a great artist and a good man.” — Stephen Colbert

Damn good.
