What you’re suggesting reads more like a generally minimalist approach to design more so than a new type-centric concept. The take-home message here seems to be ‘keep it simple’ which has been the cornerstone of good design theory for decades. Maybe other specific examples would help clarify… the Slack reference has essentially just had the illustration removed which in itself somewhat contradicts your point about using images.
