Know Where You Land on the Spectrum

Most of us outright accept our place in the world and the cards dealt to us without giving it a second thought. By succumbing to our own reality, we miss out on boundless opportunities to grow, better ourselves and connect with others. We all have a chance to break our reality and owe it to ourselves to at least challenge it on a path to our goals, whether that be self improvement, world impact, happiness, or spiritual enlightenment.

Take a step back to understand where you land on any given spectrum. Politics. Income. Spirituality. Education. Friendship. Love. Through research, conversations with people who know you best, or by simply asking the question, plot your place in a spectrum and sit with that for a minute. First, truly ask yourself if that’s where you want or think you should be.

Take, for instance and with a grain of salt, the following undoubtedly flawed yet evocative visualization of news media biases. Which sources do you find yourself reading the most, whether on purpose or by delivery through social media algorithms? What do you think this says about you? And do you like what it says about you or how you might be manipulated to view the world?

Make self-awareness and introspection a regular activity. Schedule it if you need to. Take that time to understand where you’re at in life, how things came to be, what you’re thankful for, and what you’d rather dismiss from your life entirely. Find your place in the world. Find the “You are here” dot on the map of life and chart a course to your next destination. Only when you know where you’re at can you see other paths and make plans to follow them into a better future on your own terms. Take the reins of your own life and go. You do not have to be stuck in your present reality. But first, take a step into and the time to be self-aware.
