We are all people persons

Deep down, we all have this paralyzing desire to be noticed. We need to matter. We would rather be hated than be ignored.

That’s why we are always in the frantic pursuit for relationships and groups to belong to. We’d rather have superficial friendships than none at all. We’d rather pretend that people care about us than face the reality they probably don’t.

This is not necessarily bad. Our need for human recognition and connection is normal. But it becomes idolatrous when we make people the ultimate source of our validation.

Yet, people are the very creatures that guarantee to disappoint. People are sinners, people are selfish and people are users.

Only God is worthy of such a deep trust and quest for validation. He made you. He intricately designed and tweaked you for relationship, and only God knows how to perfectly satisfy all your desires.

God will never leave you nor forsake you. God will always love you and will be your constant companion. Seek the Lord. Trust Him. Love Him. Get to know Him. Hold on to Him and He will never let you go.

But that is only the beginning. Turning to God doesn’t mean turning away from people. Realizing that God is all you need doesn’t mean that you don’t need people. God created us for community. He made us people-persons.

The fact that people will always let you down doesn’t make it good for a man to be alone.

That is why God created a special community He calls the Church. It is a community of people. Broken people. Sinful people. But it is also a community of people who know that they are not all that.

A community of people who realize that the only reason they get along is because they give God supremacy, while the only reason they fight is because they sometimes try to take the place of God. Jesus is the only person who will never let you down, and the church is His Body.
