$On the left is me at an outcrop near the site in Kakabeka Falls National Park where, in 1954, geologist Stanley Tyler collected a piece of black chert (aka flint rock) from a geologic unit called the Gunflint Formation. That 1.9 billion-year-old rock turned out to contain the first widely accepted evidence of Precambrian life. On the right is the picture I was taking in the photo on the left. The waxy appearance and curved fractures of this (red arrow) rock layer indicate that it is microcrystal$
