I remember a time when writing meant something, was an achievement even.
But now, well, many a reader’s first thought will be suspicion. Surely, what you’ve written was written by AI or is Ai-aided. And to some extent, I don’t blame them.
After all, in 2023, thanks to Ai, anyone with a fifth-grade education or lower, who can string together a prompt has become “a writer”.
Ai Detection Tools: Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
As such, reminiscent of the adage, “you are damned if you do, and you are damned if you don’t”, whether you write without the aid of Ai, there will always be that “Human Ai Detection Tool” who will STILL think what you have written was “actually written by AI”.
To worsen matters, Ai detection tools like Winston Ai and Originality Ai will still flag even 100% Ai-unaided content as at least 1–5% Ai aided content!
Frustrating as it is, AI-aided or not, let’s face it, writing as a talent and writing generally have lost their oomph, gravitas if you will.
So, thanks to Ai, since the start of 2023, literally every Tom, Dick and Hairy Harry with internet access has become a “gifted writer”, the next Hemmingway or Denning. Many thanks, Ai!
I guess that’s the paradox of having Ai in the real world.
We have got to accept both its good and bad in a lot of the fields, we as humans previously endeavored.
Let’s for instance, look deeper at Ai and writing.

Since the days of humans dwelling in caves, and even before the birth of Christ, the invention of and your ability to write and express your knowledge, thoughts and experiences was, until just last year, 2022, a measure of your communication skills, intelligence, creativity, wisdom, and…need I say it, arguably, your very humanity.
Until this year, the ability to write creatively and persuasively meant you could earn a living as either a playwright/author a la William Shakespeare or Stephen King. Or commercially, a copywriter, a la Edmund Mather and David Ogilvy.
Of course, all that has largely changed with the rise of generative Ai.
Now, at the click of a button and the crafting of a “prompt”, you can have Bing or Playground AI writing for you as if you were Hemingway or Charles Dickens!
At the speed of sound and a fraction of the time it would ordinarily have taken!
Cool yes, but equally uncool.
All those undeniably REAL writing greats of yester-year must be tossing in their graves!
And it is not only in the field of writing where Ai has produced “giftedness” and simultaneously, a double-edged sword.
The Paradox of Ai in Art: Da Vinci, Picasso, Rembrandt all in a day’s work
Before the invention of writing, art in the form of cave paintings was prehistoric humanity’s means of both recording memorable activities and of artistic expression.
Since then, the drawing and painting of art has grown beyond art for art’s sake, into a subject Art. And artists, appreciated for their talents and artistic skills…. That is until Ai.
Enter Midjourney and DALL.E, and art and artists’ talents and skills have been usurped-levelled to amateurs.
Not only is Ai able to turn a text prompt-wielding Joe Public into a Picasso, Dali or Rembrandt, but they can also reproduce some of the world’s lost masterpiece paintings.

The Paradox of AI in Education: Full Professor in less than 12 months
The twin inventions of writing and reading led to the development of one of humankind’s most esteemed formations — education institutions. Centuries later, it is due to education that technology emerged.
Notably, throughout the Covid-19 lockdowns, it was technological communication solutions such as Zoom, Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams, amongst others, which enabled Education’s survival.
Interestingly, post-late 2022, it is technological solutions, particularly the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that is paradoxically now posing Education’s most imminent threat.
Though Ai like ChatGPT, Koala and Ahrefs Ai writing tools have enhanced research and writing, they have also arguably sounded the death-knell to, among others, Education’s continuous assessment (i.e., homework and assignments) as we have known them.
No longer can it be naively thought that either homework or an assignment has been done without Ai assistance. Perhaps unless, if the work is based on content post-2022? But even then….
Education’s best bet therefore, is to scrapping homework and assignments as continuous assessment and sticking to summative assessments. Much as this is not desirable, unfortunately it is the predicament we have put ourselves with trusty generative Ai.

The same could be said of the use of such Ai as Consensus, Elicit and QuillBot in Higher Education.
With Ai, no unethical academic (and they are many out there!) nor one who desires a career in academia need fear perishing for lack of publishing academic papers.
For now, thanks to Ai, universities and colleges’ promotions system of titling academics based on the quantity of their publications has just been dealt a deathblow…
Why, with Ai, any literate academic can now be a full professor in less than 12 months.
Guaranteed!
Of course, most institutions are still at a loss as to what needs to be done. Some are waiting to take their cue from better ranked institutions. Others simply remain in denial and won’t admit that academic publishing is dead in the water…unless overhauled.
Meanwhile, lecturers are chastising students for using Ai by day, and burning the midnight oil using it themselves, by night.
Such is life in the real world of Ai.
Other than in Education, it understandably, in the field of business that Ai has also not only taken off but is also making the most money-for all concerned.
