I’m living my life for Christ, so why does God let me suffer?
I wanted to start on a topic that is especially pertinent in my life currently. We like to talk about the good, and it’s no surprise. I could talk all day on Christ’s love, salvation, grace, etc., but it may be more meaningful to break into something more difficult. We all go through valleys in life and in our walk, but what’s the purpose?
A week ago I emailed my Grandfather about some troubles I have been going through, and he responded with some incredible knowledge. I’m going to take what he taught me and put my own spin on it.
Suffering
Would any of us choose to suffer? No. I doubt it. Suffering breaks us down to the core and reveals in us our true character. Either our Christ-likeness shines, or our sinful nature takes hold. Do you find yourself sinning more in times of trouble? As Christians, we will find divine purpose in our suffering. Jesus carves out the fear in our hearts, and leaves us with joy, so long as we fix our eyes on Him.
What’s the goal of your life? Happiness? Prosperity? Surely suffering is merely an obstacle that we hurdle to get back to our comfort, right? Suffering compels us to offer up our lives to Christ. When your back is up to the wall and there is no one else to cry out to, He is faithful. And even more, He showers blessings upon us. What are they?
Salvation: When life goes smoothly, we may not realize that we are spiritually bankrupt. We don’t realize that our dependence on God never changes. It’s almost a mask. If oftentimes takes a time of suffering to bring us to our knees and proclaim 100% dependence on Jesus. I sure know that I have recently. The best part is that when we are on our knees and seeking our savior, HE IS VICTORIOUS in our lives. He invades our lives and brings peace. He brings salvation.
Drawing Closer to Christ: Our natural propensity is to separate ourselves from Christ. Human nature is to become independent and self-sufficient, not to need the help of God in anything. Suffering is the reality check that we need Christ in every aspect of our life. We need to realize our neediness and desperation for Christ in all areas. The presence of troubles bring us closer to Jesus. When His blessings carry us through the tough times, don’t declare yourself independent, but declare His victory and continue full speed ahead. He wants us on our knees daily, surrendering all to Him.
Holiness: Suffering is way that Jesus can mold our character to His. Romans 5:3 states, “but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” For suffering to mold our character for good we must learn how to live a surrendered life. Our attempts to avoid suffering may actually fight against the only one who can genuinely help us in our time of need. Victory is available through God’s grace when we submit to His will, face our trials head on, and then crucify everything in our lives that is contrary to Christ. Remember, “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us”. Romans 8:18.
The Apostle Paul states, “I want to know Christ — yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.” Philippians 3:10–11. His desire was not obscured with worthless fantasies about financial prosperity or being illusions about fleeting happiness.
How do you handle suffering? Do you turn to God, or alienate yourself? Victory comes from leaning on God with all that you have. Bow to God and pray like it depends on Him, because it does. Remember, God’s love for you is immeasurable. He is on your team and celebrates in your success.
God bless.
