Creative & Strategic Problem Solving for Social Innovation

The 2019–2020 academic year brought exceptional growth and astonishing challenges for Cosine Collective. Between fantastic validation of a past project, new workshops, and a consulting project that had to suddenly become virtual, Cosine’s DMBA C11 co-leaders Kelsey Byrd and Sarah Grimm were kept on their toes. Great things are on the horizon for incoming co-leaders, DMBA C12s Andrea Murchie and Laura Ogle as they work towards a better future during and after the COVID-19 crisis.

Cosine Helps SF Cope with COVID-19

Cosine’s 2019 recommendations to San Francisco’s Civic Bridge were accelerated through the pipeline to help San Francisco Department of Emergency Management manage their non-acute medical calls during the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only was this an honor, but it also validates the unique capabilities that DMBA students put into action. The project description is here and Cosine is excited to do more public-facing work to benefit the broader community.

Cosine Workshops

Cosine co-lead Sarah Grimm facilitating a “Design Strategy for Social Needs” workshop in Oakland, March 2020

Cosine Collective’s workshop offerings launched in Spring 2019, and have empowered non-profit leaders with new tools to solve the challenges they face. So far, Cosine facilitators have tackled strategic challenges ranging from business process design to innovation in board governance with Project Wreckless, Hip Hop for Change, and Oakland Art Murmur. Cosine will continue to grow its impact through partnerships with community organizations that are building a more equitable future.

Strategy Consulting with the Oakland YMCA

Just as California’s “shelter-in-place” was taking effect, an intrepid team of volunteers took on a 3-month project with the Oakland YMCA’s board to help them better serve their community. Despite moving to fully remote research and execution, the Cosine team impressed the client with their insights and recommendations. The work is ongoing, and a case study will likely be published in the near future.

On the Horizon: San Francisco Tenants Rights

This summer, a team of Cosine consultants will work with tenants rights lawyers in San Francisco to execute a communication protocol for protecting tenants in the aftermath of COVID-19.
