Natural looking Cosmetic Products can contain Plastic Chemicals

With the growing popularity of natural cosmetics, many conventional products have been polished to look more natural. The packaging can however mislead even the most conscious consumer and therefore it is always important to read the ingredient list — especially if the natural appearing product doesn´t have a certification.

CosmEthics constantly finds products that aren´t what they seem to be. For example these three sunscreen products all contain plastic chemicals.

NUXE Sun -sunscreen contains a plastic chemical called ACRYLATES/C10–30 ALKYL ACRYLATE CROSSPOLYMER which also can be found in the SPAR Sun Tropical -sunscreen. ORIGINS VitaZing SPF15 cream contains GLYCERYL POLYMETHACRYLATE, also a plastic. The package is green in colour and the cardboard is FSC-certified, which gives the consumer an impression of a natural/ecological product.

It is important to remember that the packaging and the product itself are two different things. The only way to know what a cosmetic products contains is to read the INCI label.

If you are looking for a plastic free sunscreen product, the natural cosmetics are a good alternative for you. For example, these three products are, besides plastic free, also free from aluminium and harmful UV-filters.

Both BIOSOLIS SPF6 and ACORELLE SPF30 — sunscreens contain karanja oil which is a natural UV-filter. Karanja oil improves the sunblock especially against UVB rays. The effectiveness of ALGA MARIS SPF30 is based on natural mineral filters. All these sunscreens are plastic free.

You can study the ingredients of these products for example with the CosmEthics app. It´s free for consumers and can be downloaded in the App Store and Play Store.
