The Ridiculous Amount of Knicks Fan Loyalty

No matter how much the NBA changes, there will always be one constant: The Knicks stink. You would think a team that has gone to the playoffs only four times in the past twenty years, will lose a good chunk of its fanbase, but for the New York Knicks that is weirdly not the case.

Most of the time, when an NBA team starts to lose, their attendance dips, but the Knicks have always stayed within the top 10 of total attendance within the entire league. I have created a formula to measure a gap between attendance percentage and winning percentage to see if there’s a correlation between winning and attendance. For example, if a team has 90% of their stadium filled but wins 70% of their games, they’ll a gap point of 20, and that seems like a good measure of a decent team. The smaller the gap usually means your team wins a lot because attendance at NBA games are usually high with the lowest being 81% belonging to both the Brooklyn Nets and Charlotte Hornets.

Low performing teams are teams that have made the playoffs less than 10 times in the last 20 years. Fans in those cities, with the exception of the Knicks, like to save their money.

While fans still continue to show up and pack the arena, the Knicks still continue to charge similar ticket prices to other winning teams.

Why don’t Knick fans go over to Brooklyn? That seems like a great idea for fans who actually want to watch a team win a game, especially with their signing of two big marquee free agents over the summer.

One may never know what causes a Knick fan to remain so loyal, maybe it’s because the team has been in the city for almost 75 years or maybe there’s something in the water, but we do know that no matter what happens, they’ll keep showing up.
