A lot of really great points here, Gabe. I’m so glad you wrote this.
While I totally agree that “big philanthropy” needs to take some notes from those who are getting involved with the gift of “beginner’s mind” (and a whole lot of cash), I also hope that new philanthropists are learning about some of the more interesting and instructive histories of philanthropy AND drawing from the analysis and tools already created by next gen iconoclasts like Resource Generation. They talk, for example, about the idea of “social justice philanthropy,” where the philanthropists put more energy into organizing their own peers to give $ than assuming they know what’s best to do with that $ once it’s ready to be mobilized. The latter role is better played by people with relationships on the ground in local contexts. Here’s a great piece, for example, of how they tackled giving in New Orleans post-Katrina.
