Coverr ❤ Google

When we started Coverr, we focused on one simple idea : make beautiful videos available for creators who need them for any sort of project, video ad, music video, video background, or digital product that they’re building.

Since launching Coverr as a side project 5 years ago, we’ve received endless requests and questions about an API for our videos. Many developers, who were building apps and websites where visuals were needed, didn’t want to settle for photos and wanted to have easy access to high-quality videos.

The Coverr API is (almost) here!

Although we haven’t officially launched our API for the public, we did start testing it with a few design partners and when the opportunity to work with Google came up, we didn’t think twice. For us, Google = Internet. An opportunity to empower so many creators and makers around the world is not something to pass on. …

We’ve all experienced this… The clock almost hits 10AM — your meeting is in a couple of minutes, you’re still in your pj’s and your room is a mess. You quickly throw on a work shirt from your closet but there’s no way you can clean your entire room just in time for the meeting. You struggle finding a good spot with a clean background and continuously change your laptop’s position. What if we told you there’s a solution for that?

Zoom is definitely our preferred way of video chatting these days… and they’ve got your back! Zoom’s Virtual Background feature allows you to use a still image or a video in the background — and poof, your mess is gone. …

Nowadays, trendy images aren’t enough to keep people engaged. In a world where attention means everything, businesses must find a way to hook their customers instantly, while communicating their services without being too forceful. In this case, an image may speak a thousand words, but a great homepage video gets the message across ten-fold.

In fact, we’ve learned that homepage videos can improve conversion rates by 20%. Just imagine, something as simple as a short intro video or homepage video background could be the deciding factor that transforms a site visitor to a converted user.

With that in mind, if you’re wondering how to keep customers on your site long enough to subscribe or make a purchase, then here are a few things to consider when it comes to making a stunning homepage…

It’s estimated that in 2019, global consumer internet video traffic will make up 80% of all consumer internet traffic, and that’s just the tip (if not all) of the iceberg. From a social media standpoint, Facebook boasts an incredible 8 billion video views per day, and Youtube claims that mobile video intake rises a staggering 100% annually. Needless to say, tons of people are glued to their screens searching for worthwhile content, and that’s where you can take advantage of the boom.

Free stock videos are a great way to engage with viewers without doing too much work yourself. Whether you’re looking to build a popular website or you need footage for a creative project, free stock videos can take your work to the next level, while generating a solid interest. Of course, you could always use professional footage to fuel your creative projects, but why bog yourself down with outrageous fees when you don’t have to? We know how hard filmmaking can be, but free videos give you the freedom to create on your own time. …

Since launching about two years ago, we’ve seen an explosion in interest and usage of background videos on websites. Of course, in the world of web design, trends come and go, but take a peek at sites across a few different industries and you’ll see that background videos (and the increasing primacy of video, in general) means that this is one trend that’s probably going to stick around.

For those uninitiated, background videos are short, looping snippets of video which play on webpages (often on the homepage) and add a cinematic, engaging element that’s a step above stock photography. …

TL;DR — People want stock footage/images that doesn’t look stock.

It seems like in the past few years, the word “Stock footage” started to be mentioned in a negative kind a way. Designers started to use it as an “offensive” word when reviewing design work and overall it felt like ‘Stock’ means — ‘bad’.

About a year ago we noticed a need for background videos as a growing design trend. You know, those short looping clips of video which play in the background of web pages, adding a more dynamic and engaging element than the standard photos you’re used to.

We were shocked to find that nothing like the Unsplash of video existed. …

Matt’s initial concepts for the Coverr logo

A few months back when we launched, our main goal was to quickly launch a free tool so that users could easily find and download Coverr videos (short, looping snippets of video which can play in the background of web pages.) We saw that this was a growing trend in web design and that no one had offered a resource for these videos in the same way that stock photos were offered.

In our haste, we didn’t have much time to design a proper logo, quickly dashing one off ourselves. But after a 150 Coverr videos, many submitted by our fabulous community of users, we felt it was time for a small makeover. …

How went to #1 and got over 1,200 upvotes on Product Hunt.

Quick summary of what you’re about to read.
A month ago, Coverr, a side project of our two startups, (CodersClan and, two marketplaces in the coding and video space) was surprisingly “hunted” on Product Hunt. It caught fire pretty quickly, rose to #1 and garnered over 1200 upvotes. And it was all 100% organic.

After this whirlwind, we decided to analyze how everything happened and why Coverr was such a success. Here are our insights.

Everything went wrong, and yet…

Coverr was hunted at what we thought was the worst timing possible. It was a weekend evening, seven hours after the daily list started (at 12am PST), and we were 250 votes behind the #1 at that time. …
