G4 - Code Monkeys CREATED BY Adam de la Peña

I’m back at it again with the coding.

I feel privileged to be able to carry with me, my first memory of interacting with a CPU. That first experience was pre high school. But I was already typing papers for school. So my dexterity for typing was developed way before I started programming. The part that I do want to forget about, is that old school orange terminal. Yuck. I prefered the black and white MS DOS screen, to whatever that orange thing was. But now that I’m back at it again, it’s been a bit of a catching up.

This summer I started working at tollwerk Gmbh, a Typo3 Web Agency. Therefore I’m working with PHP again. An although I originally started much later in my programming days with PHP; I have found a new level of respect for the language the the team who is supporting its evolution.

For the past three months my focus has been on learning about the principles of Clean Code, Unit Tests, and this obscurity that is Test Driven Development.

It feels like I’ve been playing with Duplo, and now I’m doing much larger and complex lego sets. And that’s a good thing.

Our lives become richer and more meaningful when we are constantly growing.

But I haven’t been making as many videos as I was prior to this new development in my personal life. So when I visited Munich for 2018’s JSCraft BarCamp. It seems like the perfect opportunity.

JSCraft BarCamp Munich (#jscc)

Three years I go I attended the first JSCC event. Back then, the 2016 presidential campaigns were in full swing. And that’s the same time that the Access Hollywood tape where leaked. Not a fun time to be an American in foreign land.

The second year I wasn’t able to go because at work we had two employees put in their final notice and they left our team, which left us undermanned and I had to work.

But finally this year, I was able to return. Now, doesn’t matter what language you code in, it’s all about solving problems. And ofcourse JavaScript is different from PHP but the higher abstract concepts are the same. That’s why things like clean architecture are interesting to me. I totally geek out with it.

Those are the things that I wish we could expose to the next generation of humans. Those who are gonna go through a computer science curriculum at some University. And that’s who I need to be thinking about now.

I don’t foresee a long career as programmer, but I do enjoy making things happen with code. I don’t think I’ll retire from tollwerk. But I do want to start figuring out how to help share the clean code message with my other discipline in which I too enjoy, filmmaking.

I type because my handwriting isn't THAT legible.
