Employee Spotlight: Keith Theisen

Meet Keith Theisen, Digital Sales Consultant for Cox Automotive

Tell me a little bit about your background and what led you to your current job.

I started selling cars back in 1993 and used my background in computers to start up a car selling program on local bulletin boards in my community (think early Internet communication). That was quite successful so when AutoByTel launched their service, we were one of the first dealerships in the country to sign up to sell cars online. Ever since then, I have made online sales and marketing the cornerstone of my operations. I ran an 8 store group’s efforts and managed a top 25 Ford store before deciding to join with Autotrader, a Cox Automotive brand, back in 2008.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love the autonomy and trust that my manager and our organization put in me to do my job the best way that I see fit. There is no set regimen or quota hanging over our heads. We are not out there begging for dollars… all we need to do is just take care of each dealer and help them grow their business. The rest takes care of itself. Cox Automotive embraces the belief of the late Zig Ziglar… “If you help enough other people get what they want, you will always get what you want”. Our dealers come first and we both end up enjoying the rewards of this philosophy.

How do you spend your time outside of work?

When I am not at work, I love travelling the world with my family. Because of the generous vacation time that we are allowed, we have been able to visit Iceland, Taiwan, Japan, Mexico, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Jamaica and Aruba over the past 2 years. We also set up a family goal to visit all 50 states and have gotten to see all but 8 states since I joined this organization. I hope to finish the remaining states before 2021, so I can say that I saw all 50 states before I turned 50. We also love the outdoors and try to get out on our kayaks and explore the scenic waterways of our great state of Florida every chance we get.

How has Cox supported you in your career growth?

My managers at Cox have been amazing at discovering my strengths and getting me involved with task forces, feedback councils, mentorships, speaking opportunities, NADA and other events where I can benefit the company and challenge myself to reach new levels of personal and career growth. They have funded ridealong and other learning opportunities across the state, region and country so that we could learn and share best practices and “cross-pollinate” the knowledge across our organization. Coming up next semester, I hope to take advantage of their amazing support of continuing education and start to earn my MBA in International Business. As Cox Automotive expands internationally, I hope that this will position me to embrace the next step when it becomes available, and continue to make myself and Cox Automotive even better.
