Ways Your Child Can Benefit from Learning Cursive Handwriting at School

--

Today, schools have become very modern and many schools make more use of technology including computer and tablets to impart education. This has made handwriting become almost a lost art. In many schools, teaching cursive hand-writing has become optional. A constant increase in use of technology in classrooms means that fewer children are using handwriting. There are many psychologists, education experts, and also teachers and student’s counselor at the international schools in Kandivali who argue that handwriting is still a very valuable skill and should be continued an integral part of curriculum. Here are some ways in which your child can benefit from learning cursive handwriting:

It Makes Learning Easier

Learning cursive handwriting and practicing it regularly can be very beneficial to those who are facing learning difficulties. A 2012 British report suggests that teaching cursive handwriting to children with dyslexia could help in their treatment. It appears that learning the movement of alphabets/words from left to right on the paper helps kids develop the essential motor skill which helps in preventing inversions/reversals of alphabets — confusing ‘d’ with ‘b’.

Increased Level of Productivity and Creativity

There have been many studies, involving children in grades 2 through 5, that shows that cursive handwriting, printing, and typing on keyboards — all use unique pathways in the brain. Handwriting allows the kids to be more productive and also allows them to express more ideas when compared to typing and printing. There was another study that shows that while working on a writing assignment, a 5th-grader having better writing skills tend to activate more areas of his/her brain (including the areas that are associated with working memory, cognition, and language) as compared to peers who have poor writing skills (who activates just memory regions). The teachers at the preschool in Borivali also suggest that kids who have better writing skills tend to perform better academically.

Enhancements in One’s Auditory Learning Capabilities

The psychologists at the University of California and University of Princeton presented several studies that shows that students who jot down notes on notebooks rather than typing on laptops tend to perform better on tests and examination as compared to the latter. Researchers and the education experts at the IGCSE schools in Dahisar West believe that kids who take notes by typing on keyboards tend to transcribe lectures only verbatim. Whereas, those who jot down notes on notebooks tend to better process the information, all the while reframing the given information in their own unique way, which helps in reinforcing learning.

Preparation for Earlier Literacy

According to a study, when five-year-old kid first learns to write, many key regions of his/her brain are stimulated that are associated with reading. The kids who participated in the study were presented with certain letters and they were asked to further reproduce those letters by either writing it on paper, or by typing it on keyboard. The study showed that those who jotted down the letters activated those part of brain that adults use when they are writing and reading, and those who types showcased a weaker stimulation of brain.
