Mistake

Lazy afternoon. My apartment buzzer rang, but I wasn’t expecting anyone.

My dog got all perked up and started to bark and wait, bark and wait. I watch him, anxious and expectant, when suddenly, before I could reach the intercom, the person making the call realized her mistake and the sound was gone.

He kept waiting still, all attention and expectations, for a while. I’ve found myself saying to him:

— Let it go, sweetie. Sometimes, that’s just how life is: someone rings at your door, but it was all just a big mistake.
