1 of 3 Bathroom Remodel: Before & After

My husband and I set out to renovate our ONLY bathroom in our home. It was a cute black & white retro bathroom, but the wall tile was loosening and the whole room needed a facelift. We decided to stay with the black & white theme but swap the hard to keep clean black tile and white grout to fresh white tile with grey grout. <Check back here next week for my tips on DIY tiling and grouting for the exact brand and color!> From the original bathroom, the only things we kept were the tub & floor tile. Everything else we gutted down to the studs. We [my husband, his dad, & my dad] redid the plumbing, electrical, & HVAC. There was quite a bit of rework since we relocated the vanity light, added a vent/light combo, & redirected the air vent location. The biggest improvement, hands down, was changing the air vent from the wall next to the vanity to the vanity toe kick. This allowed us to more than double our countertop and mirror space. You wouldn’t think the mirror would be a big deal but on the one morning a week that Keven & I got ready at the same time, the “sized for one mirror” usually sent me packing with my makeup to the guest bedroom mirror.
Anyways, once the Sheetrock and tile backer board were installed, it was my turn! I’ve always wanted to try my hand at tiling, so I figured it was now or never. Some jested that most people start with a backsplash or something simple, but not me. I knew the look I wanted in the bathroom and was ready to learn on the job to get it there. I’ll go into more detail in next week’s blogs, but tiling really wasn’t that difficult. Grouting was another story, but by the end of the process I was getting the hang of it. That’s actually the reason I thought of starting this blog. I wanted to remember the little tricks I learned for my next go around on tiling, especially the grouting. And I figured this wouldn’t be the last DIY home improvement project we would do, so I might as well start a catalog of projects to refer back to. Something to look forward to!
Keven & I are happy with our fresh looking bathroom and the functionality is a win for everyone! I hope you enjoy seeing this transformation and can use some of the tips to come to make your DIY tiling project a little easier. Check out some more of the before and after pictures below.
