An Open Letter to People who Write Open Letters.

Dear People who Write Open Letters,

Please stop writing Open Letters.

Writing your Open Letter does indeed socially signal your interest in some goal, cause or objective — well done you!

It will not make any substantive difference to anyone or significantly advance the cause that you advocate.

Instead, please write closed letters to people who are actually interested and/or do some other actually constructive thing towards the goal you purport to desire.

If I could think of a way to get Open Letter Writers to stop Writing Open Letters other than writing an Open Letter, believe me, I would — the irony is not lost upon me — this Open Letter will make no difference to anyone anywhere.

But I feel a little bit better having written this Open Letter and vented a tiny amount — which, as I have noted, is pretty much all anyone is ever going to achieve by writing an Open Letter.

So, my goal achieved as far as the means would ever allow it, I will draw this Open Letter to a close.

Yours Sincerely,

Jonathan. C. Walmsley.
