When I returned from college at 21, my parents converted to Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Once I tell anybody that my parents are Jehovah’s Witnesses, after confirming that they do not celebrate any holidays or birthdays, the next question they ask me is, “Are they allowed to drink alcohol?”

Many people are under the assumption that JWs cannot consume booze. The answer to this question is a bit more complex …

The Simple Answer

Jehovah’s Witnesses can drink alcohol in most situations.

According to their official website, JW.org, “The Bible condemns drunkenness and overindulgence but not the moderate consumption of alcohol. (1 Corinthians 6:9, 10)”

After all, Jesus turned water into wine. A common utterance, I know, but it’s based on the Bible — their main source of information (or more importantly what The WatchTower tells them to think and their interpretation of the Bible) — which states alcohol is okay, but drunkenness is not.

The Loophole

NEVER ADMIT INTOXICATION.

If you’re asking, “Huh?” right now, I get it.
